iBridges: Where data management meets data work In-Person
This full-day course aims to give researchers insights into the concepts of data management so they can confidently work with their (meta)data — from uploading and downloading files to designing small compute workflows and taking advantage of metadata.
Designed for researchers from any background, this course will:
- Introduce iRODS (integrated Rule-Oriented Data System) — this sits on top of storage systems to give you a unified way to organise and access your data and allows you to “tag” your data with metadata. YODA, UU’s research data management system, is iRODS-based.
- Introduce iBridges, a set of open-source tools making iRODS-based data management services — like YODA — accessible in a user-friendly way.
- Combine these building blocks into a complete compute workflow so you can apply analysis workflows to data and annotating data automatically with metadata.
Workshop Overview
Topics: Morning Session
- How to use the graphical user interface
- Basics of the command line interface
- How to transfer data and perform metadata operations using both interfaces
- No prior Python experience is required.
Topics: Afternoon Session
- Deep dive into the iBridges Python interface to take full advantage of the iBridges features
- Putting together the full workflow from finding data, to analysing data and creating findable and reproducible research results
Prerequisites:
The day is divided into two parts. The morning session is aimed at researchers with no programming experience.
In the afternoon we will dive into the Python API, where knowledge about the Python syntax and some experience with programming or scripting is needed.
You can sign-up for the two sessions individually.
Materials & Preparation:
Step by step installation & set-up instructions are in the coursebook.
